The Baudelot Cooler derives it’s name from a certain Mr. Baudelot, who in 1859, patented a heat exchanger intended for use in the brewery industry. The original machine consisted of a series of horizontal metal tubes through which a refrigerant (such as ammonia) could be passed. Beer wort was then trickled down the outside of the this cold tube bundle and quickly cooled before being collected in a tray at the bottom of the apparatus. This type of cooler is still in use in the brewery industry today, more than 150 years later!
By cascading a liquid by gravity over the Baudelot tube bundle, the liquid can be chilled quickly to a temperature near it’s freezing point. As mentioned above, this feature is particularly useful to brewers. Baudelot coolers are also widely used to chill water to very low temperatures (32-33F) which is then used in hydrocooling equipment to remove field heat from fruits and vegetables immediately after harvest. Hydrocooling is widely used for post-harvest cooling of cherries, strawberries, blueberries, asparagus, sweet corn, carrots, melons, peaches, and other high value crops to extend storage shelf life and improve quality.
Colmac builds standard and custom Baudelot coolers with copper, stainless steel, and hot dip galvanized steel tubes. Tube bundles can be circuited for any working fluid including ammonia, R404a, R507, R410a, or other halocarbons, propylene glycol, calcium or sodium chloride brines. Any feed arrangement is available including, DX, pump recirculated, and gravity flooded. Baudelot cooler tube bundles can also be provided with USDA approved HDPE tanks.
